POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Foreman, the Utility Laborer – Traffic Signals Division supports the crew by performing a variety of site preparation, excavation, material handling, and concrete work tasks. This role involves operating small equipment, setting up traffic control, maintaining tools, and assisting with underground and concrete operations. The Utility Laborer must work efficiently, follow safety regulations, and support project workflow in various environments, often with minimal supervision.

YOUR ROLE

Assist the Foreman in daily tasks to maintain project efficiency.

Dig, spread, and level concrete, dirt, and gravel using hand tools.

Assist with potholing, trenching, and underground utility identification before excavation.

Follow proper material staging, layout, and site organization procedures.

Signal and guide concrete trucks for efficient discharge and minimal spillage.

Use come-along, shovels, and floats to spread and level concrete.

Assist with floating edges, grade pins, curb cleanup, and patching.

Remove forms from set concrete and properly stage materials for reuse.

Operate small equipment such as bobcats, rollers, compactors, and hoists.

Maintain and clean hand tools, power tools, and equipment (e.g., saws, drills, bull floats, tamper plates).

Conduct basic maintenance checks on generators, extension cords, and fuel-powered tools.

Set up traffic control devices, barricades, and lane closures as directed.

Understand and follow flagging procedures to ensure site safety.

Wear and enforce PPE compliance, including silica exposure protection.

Participate in weekly safety meetings (Toolbox Talks) and report any concerns.

Assist with installing conduit, ground boxes, and foundation anchor bolts per Foreman’s instructions.

Support pipe installation and ensure proper alignment, positioning, and jointing.

Work collaboratively with the crew to maintain workflow efficiency and job site safety.

Perform other duties as assigned to support the successful completion of projects.

WHAT YOU BRING

1-2 years of construction experience required, preferably underground utilities, or concrete work.

Physical strength and endurance to perform demanding tasks in various weather conditions.

Basic knowledge of excavation, traffic control, and construction safety practices.

Ability to operate small equipment and use hand tools efficiently.

Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.

Team-oriented mindset with a proactive approach to assisting the crew.

Reliable attendance and flexibility to work overtime and weekends as needed.

Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The Utility Laborer – Traffic Signals Division role requires the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and perform frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching in outdoor environments. The position involves working in trenches, confined spaces, and around heavy equipment while being exposed to various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind. Candidates must have the manual dexterity to operate hand tools, power tools, and small equipment, as well as the physical endurance to perform digging, material handling, and concrete work for extended periods. The role also requires good vision and hearing to recognize safety signals, assess site conditions, and ensure effective communication in a high-noise environment.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Must be willing to travel within the State of Texas as needed, overnight or out of town stay may be required.
